چکیده

We employed a Mohr-Coulomb safety factor equation to assess the response of ice-cemented slopes in the stable upland zone of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) to artificial increases in mean summertime soil surface temperatures (MSSST). Results show that ice-rich, silty tills on slopes 20° could fail by planar sliding with an increase in MSSST of ~5o to 9oC. This change corresponds to an atmospheric increase of ~5o to 9oC, which lies just outside the envelope of warming predicted to occur in this region over the next century. If we assume that current soil-moisture conditions can be applied to slope deposits in the distant past, and that these slope deposits have remained physically stable for millions of years, then our results suggest that MSSST in the upland zone did not increase by more than ~5o to 9oC since deposition of most deposits, perhaps as much as 10 million years ago.

Sensitivity of ice-cemented Antarctic soils to greenhouse-induced thawing: Are terrestrial archives at risk?

We modeled the sensitivity of six ice-cemented slope deposits from the western McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica to failure by shallow, thaw-induced planar sliding. The deposits examined have purportedly remained physically stable, without morphologic evidence for downslope movement, for millions of years. Could they fail in the near future from greenhouse-induced warming? To address this questio...

Sources and Levels of Ambient Ocean Sound near the Antarctic Peninsula

Arrays of hydrophones were deployed within the Bransfield Strait and Scotia Sea (Antarctic Peninsula region) from 2005 to 2009 to record ambient ocean sound at frequencies of up to 125 and 500 Hz. Icequakes, which are broadband, short duration signals derived from fracturing of large free-floating icebergs, are a prominent feature of the ocean soundscape. Icequake activity peaks during austral ...

The Association of Antarctic Krill Euphausia superba with the Under-Ice Habitat

The association of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba with the under-ice habitat was investigated in the Lazarev Sea (Southern Ocean) during austral summer, autumn and winter. Data were obtained using novel Surface and Under Ice Trawls (SUIT), which sampled the 0-2 m surface layer both under sea ice and in open water. Average surface layer densities ranged between 0.8 individuals m(-2) in summer...

The Effect of Atmospheric Forcing Resolution on Delivery of Ocean Heat to the Antarctic Floating Ice Shelves

Oceanic melting at the base of the floating Antarctic ice shelves is now thought to be a more significant cause of mass loss for the Antarctic ice sheet than iceberg calving. In this study, a 10-km horizontal-resolution circum-Antarctic ocean–sea ice–ice shelf model [based on the Regional OceanModeling System (ROMS)] is used to study the delivery of ocean heat to the base of the ice shelves. Th...

Internal melting in Antarctic sea ice: Development of ‘‘gap layers’’

[1] An internal ‘‘gap’’ layer of deteriorated sea ice is colocated with a significant microbial biological community in late first year and second year Antarctic sea ice in summer. We modeled gap layer formation using a thermal flux model based on the summer reversal in thermal gradient and the thermal conductivity found in the upper ice column. The conductive model gives internal sea ice melt ...
